SUMMARY:April Working Bee
DESCRIPTION:Big clean up at Fords Road\, Campbells Creek\nAs part of our platypus focused project\, we plan to revegetate a section of Campbells Creek that few of us have ever visited.  The creek here is a wide and long pool\, probably quite deep.  Used for farming for many decades\, the adjoining parcel of public land is now becoming available for restoration work. \nToday we’ll be clearing the creek bank of obstacles to future planting.  These obstructions are mainly branches of willows and other woody weeds.  We will cut the branches and carry them away from the creek.  Some we’ll burn on top of dead blackberries—removing both in one go! \nThere’s also some rubbish that we’ll move away from the creek. \nA few woody weeds remain alive.  We’ll deal with as many of these as we can on the day by ‘drilling and filling’ or ‘cutting and painting’—both techniques for introducing herbicide into the sapwood and bark. \nArrive for a 10:00 a.m. start.  If arriving by car\, the best place to park is near the big hay/machinery shed (on the left as you drive out along Fords Rd).  This link is to a Google Maps pin.  We have permission to park there. \nPlease wear clothing suitable for the weather\, gloves and sturdy footwear.  The forecast is for a calm\, partly cloudy day with temperatures ranging from 14 to 17°C.  Gloves will be essential\, preferably heavy duty.  The ground is uneven and has hidden obstacles. \nGiven all the hazards\, today’s working bee is not so suitable for young children\, unless constantly and closely supervised and kept away from danger. \nWe’ll supply most tools\, but if you are experienced and confident in their use\, feel free to bring: \n\nChainsaw and supplies\nCordless drill and drill bit/s of about 10 mm diameter\n\nAfterwards\, we’ll have light refreshments (supplied). \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:February 2026 working bee
DESCRIPTION:Activity:  More fun in the creek and nearby.  NOTE different start time! \nWeather forecast: 19° – 25°C\, mostly sunny\, light SSE winds \nDescription: \nToday we’ll return to the area near Princess Street where Ranters Gully runs into the creek.  Here’s photo of what it used to look like before we first intervened in the 2000s. \nthere’s a range of activities available.  We’ll be: \n\nCleaning up: collecting rubbish that’s accumulated since 2011 when we held the first planting day\nPlanting: we can still establish plants into the wet edge of the creek because the creek runs all year here\nWeeding: learn how to distinguish between the good and the bad plants!   Despite lots of weed control since our plantings in May last year the revegetation will benefit from hand weeding using simple hand tools.\n\nWhere: Meet here\,  for a 9:00 a.m. start\, just north of Princess St\, Campbells Creek.  You can park on Princess St:  it’s only 140 metres from the meeting place.  Alternatively\, you may wish to cycle or walk in along the walking and cycling trail.  There are many places to start if you want to travel the trail. \nPlease don’t drive vehicles into the unnamed street off Princess St.  This is part of the trail and partly a private driveway. \nIf you arrive late\, we’ll be working nearby. \nPlease bring:  Your own drinking water. \nWear: gardening/leather gloves\, hat\, and wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.  Gumboots will come in handy if you want to do the planting out! \nWe’ll finish up at 11:00 with light refreshments provided. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:December 2025 end of year celebration\, working bee and free BBQ
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, come help us celebrate another year of our landcare good works with several activities followed by lunch. The weather forecast is perfect: a dry day\, not too hot (a top temperature of 19°C). \nWe’ll be helping manage the lower parts of Forest and Barkers creeks where they join to form Campbells Creek.  Our local Djaara people have given this area the name Booladj Kiarp Bolealong\, which is often translated as ‘three creeks meet’.  This area is included in the Forest Creek Revitalisation project* which we and upstream partners are implementing\, working to link and improve habitat\, add threatened species and improve creek form along the urban creeks. \nWe have a variety of activities for you this Sunday\, so the choice is yours! \n\nPlant identification challenge\nSome of our revegetation is being swamped by big\, thirsty weeds\, so weeding will really help\nThere’s always the opportunity to collect litter\, especially along Forest Ck\nWe’ll also be cleaning out the rubbish and soil dumped behind some nearby residences\nOr simply have a wander around this increasingly lovely area and enjoy the place pools and serenity.\n\n  \nMeet at the east end of Yandell St\, Castlemaine here for a 10:00 a.m. start.  There’s limited car parking space there but more around the corner here south of the sewage pumping station or in Gaulton St. \nBring: \n\nWear hat\, gloves\, sturdy footwear\nBring your own water and camping chairs for a sit down at lunch time.\n\nAfter the working bee we would love you to help us celebrate another year of caring for our beloved creek. \nWe will be offering free lunch and a chance to gather together under the trees in Booladj Kiarp Bolealong near here. \n  \nFor catering purposes\, please RSVP to info@focc.org.au by Friday 5th December. \nHope to see you there! \n*The Forest Creek Revitalisation Project is funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program\, with the support of the North Central CMA.

SUMMARY:November 2025 working bee
DESCRIPTION:Activity:  weeding and more planting at Lewis Swamp South \nDescription: \nToday we return to “Lewis Swamp South”\, the interesting creekside and wetland area adjacent to the trail.  It’s two months since we planted many hundreds of Poa and sedge tussocks here.  After the recent good rains\, there’ll be lots of weeds threatening to smother our plantings.  As well as dealing with some of these weeds\, we’ll plant out nardoo\, Austral gypsy wort and several other interesting wetland plants\, most of which are rare in our district. \nOur work will help increase the value of this area as habitat for many species\, including the platypus that use this part of Campbells Creek all year round.  This area was a prior alignment of the creek and has some beautiful mini-billabongs and shallow wetlands that also provide excellent frog habitat. \nPlease bring a garden trowel or similar tool if you can.  They will be useful for digging out angled onion (Allium triquetrum\, also known as three-corner garlic).  Although declared noxious\, it is perfectly edible like many others in that family.  This swampy area used to be heavily infested with angled onion.  Our efforts have substantially reduced its numbers but there’s still quite a few.  Eradicating it here will also help prevent infestations downstream. \nMeet at the Lewis Drive carpark\, Castlemaine for a 10:00 a.m. start.  This is just past the entrance to the Salvage Yard and Good Op Shop businesses. If you arrive late\, we’ll be working from there downstream. \nWear: gloves\, sturdy footwear (gumboots advisable) and clothing suitable for the weather. \nBring your own drinking water if you need it. \nWe’ll provide everything else\, including light refreshments afterwards. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:October 2025 working bee
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll be improving platypus habitat values above the Princess Street bridge in Campbells Creek.  People often see platypus from Princess St! \nAlthough this section has plentiful trees\, it needs more shrubs at the edge of the creek.  We’ll be planting bottlebrush\, paperbark and tea-tree as well as some sedges. \nMeet: at the new pedestrian bridge north of Princess Street\, Campbells Creek for a 10:00 a.m. start.  If you’re driving\, please park along Princess Street where there’s plenty of parking space.   From there\, it’s a 165 m walk to the meeting point.   If you arrive late\, we’ll be working between the bridge there and Princess St. \nWear: gloves\, sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.  Gumboots are advisable for this activity.  it’s easier to be in the water and plant seedlings without having to bend down\, so if you have waders or wetsuits please bring them: the water is usually about mid-calf to mid-thigh deep. \nBring your own drinking water if you need it. \nWe’ll supply everything else\, including light refreshments afterwards. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:September 2025 working bee
DESCRIPTION:Activity:  planting at Lewis Swamp south \nDescription: \nPlease come along today to help us restore this interesting creekside and wetland area adjacent to the trail.  What we call Lewis Swamp south was a prior alignment of the creek and has some beautiful mini-billabongs and shallow wetlands.  Globally\, wetlands are under extreme pressure from human activity\, with around two thirds of the world’s wetlands present in 1900 now destroyed (Australian DCCEEW). \nAlthough Lewis Swamp is small\, within Mount Alexander Shire\, it is significant.  Our district has very few wetlands and thanks to our efforts\, it is already much better than before when this area used to be dominated by terrible\, invasive weeds\, including crack willow\, Phalaris and blackberry.  Thanks to several years of our work\, this area is now almost totally free of them\, so we can focus again on restoring the indigenous species that should grow here.  Today we hope to plant many hundreds more tussocky grasses\, sedges and other plants.  This work will help increase the value of this area as habitat for many species\, including the platypus that uses this part of Campbells Creek all year round. \n Meet at the Lewis Drive carpark\, Castlemaine for a 10:00 a.m. start.  This is just past the entrance to the Salvage Yard and Good Op Shop businesses. SUMMARY:April 2025 Working bee for Eltham Copper Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:Activity:  improving potential habitat for Eltham Copper Butterfly. \nDescription:  Connecting Country has funded us to improve the suitability of some of ‘our territory’ for the nationally endangered Eltham Copper Butterfly (ECB).  You can read more about it on the Connecting Country web page.  You’ll see that one of the butterfly’s essential requirements is the Sweet Bursaria plant (usually a shrub in our district).  Although Sweet Bursaria is relatively common around Castlemaine\, we don’t yet have many plants on this project site. \nToday we’ll be sowing Bursaria seed collected from plants known to support ECB around Castlemaine\, one of its few remaining habitat ‘hot spots’.  We’ll also be sowing seed of other plant species associated with nearby ECB populations and species that flower in summer\, which is when the adult butterflies need nectar. \nMeet: here on the trail from Honeycomb Road for a 10:00 a.m. start.  There’s plenty of parking space here at the north end of Honeycomb Road.  It’s a 200 m walk from there to the meeting point.  If you arrive late\, we’ll be working somewhere near here. \nWhen:  10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m Sunday the 27th of April \nPlease bring:  Your own drinking water.  We’ll supply the tools. \nWear: gardening/leather gloves\, hat\, and wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather. \nWe’ll finish up with light refreshments. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:End-of-year Working bee + free BBQ
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, come help us celebrate another year of our landcare good works with several activities followed by lunch. The weather forecast is perfect: a dry\, mostly sunny day with a top temperature of 21°C. \nWe’ll be helping manage the Winters Flat part of Campbells Creek between Butterworth St and Elliot St in Castlemaine.   Located on the other side of the creek to the trail\, few people visit this lovely area with long deep pools\, big river red-gums\, and decades-old wattles and other revegetation.   Being close to the creek\, the ground is soft and moist in summer with plenty of green grass in summer. \nWe haven’t given this area much attention lately.  However\, council hopes to obtain funding to improve this area and has done a great job reducing the previously severe infestation of Chilean Needle-grass. \nWe have a variety of options for you this Sunday\, so the choice is yours!\nYou can: \n\nHelp deal with woody weeds that continue to re-infest CCk.  These are mostly the garden escapee Desert Ash with the occasional crack willow and gorse.  We’ll be cutting and herbicide painting the larger ones and hoeing out small ones.  There’s also a few Purple-top Verbena\, another garden ‘thug’.\nSalvage tree guards from plants that no longer need them\nLearn how to test water quality (WaterWatch)\nSee what water ’bugs’ live here (aka River Detectives—YouTube video)\nLearn how to identify and map weeds.\n\nMeet here near the west end of Elliot St for a 10:00 a.m. start.  There’s car parking space nearby or in the south end of Butterworth St. \nBring: \n\nWear hat\, gloves\, sturdy footwear\nBring your own water and camping chairs for a sit down at lunch time.\nIf you can\, bring along long handled loppers\, secateurs\, pruning or bow saws\, and/or mattocks.\nIf you are interested in weed identification and mapping infestations\, bring your mobile phone (it must be GPS equipped\, but most are) and contact our environment officer Ian Higgins for instructions on installing and setting up the app.\n\nAfter the working bee we would love you to help us celebrate another year of caring for our beloved creek. \nWe will be offering lunch and a chance to gather together. \nFor catering purposes\, please RSVP to info@focc.org.au by Friday 6th December. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:November 2024 Working bee
DESCRIPTION:Activity:  \nTackling a ’new’ species threatening our patch. \n Description:   \nGlobally the threat of invasive weeds\, animals\, fungi\, etc.\, is estimated to contribute to ~ 60% of all extinctions.  In our patch of Country\, the public land along the creek is under attack from many invasive species.  Recently\, South African Orchid\, known scientifically as Disa bracteata\, started to colonise the hilly piece of public land where we’re improving habitat for the endangered Eltham Copper Butterfly.  So far\, the weed orchid is uncommon and as a new\, emerging weed\, we still have a chance to prevent it becoming out of control at this location.  \nToday we’ll be conducting a search and destroy campaign across the site\, looking for this weed. Here’s two photos of weed orchid plants dug out recently from the site.  Along the way\, we’ll also deal with any gorse plants that we find.  \nIf you’d like to participate in mapping this or other weed infestations\, take a look at this guide.  You’ll need to install a free app. on your GPS equipped mobile phone and bring it along to the working bee.  Our Environment Officer will give you the password and further instructions. \nIn May\, we sowed seeds of Sweet Bursaria\, wattles\, hop-bush\, everlasting daisies and Banksia.  Many of these have germinated abundantly.  Today we’ll be able to see what has survived a very dry October-November. \n We’ll need stout tools\, capable of digging down to 10 cm in soil that unless it rains beforehand\, is likely to be very hard.  Picks or heavy-duty knives are suitable. \n Meet: here on the trail from Honeycomb Road for a 10:00 a.m. start.  There’s plenty of parking space here at the north end of Honeycomb Road.  It’s a 200 m walk from there to the meeting point.  If you arrive late\, we’ll be working somewhere near here. \nWhen:  10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m Sunday the 17th of November \nPlease bring:  Your own drinking water and if you can\, a suitable sharp pointed digging tool.  We’ll supply the rest. \nWear: gardening/leather gloves\, hat\, sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather. \nWe’ll finish up with light refreshments. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:October 2024 Working bee
DESCRIPTION:Activity:  2024’s truly final creekside planting at Lewis Swamp south. \nDescription: \nLast month\, we didn’t quite manage to plant all the seedlings destined for this creekside and wetland area adjacent to the trail.  On Sunday\, we hope to finish the job! \nThanks to funding from the North Central CMA\, this area is now free of Crack Willow\, the notorious weed of national significance.  That and our own efforts at weed control and revegetation are recovering this “Creekline Grassy Woodland” type of vegetation\, listed as an endangered community in Victoria. Because Campbells Creek has permanent flows from this site and downstream\, the environment here supports platypus\, turtles and other aquatic animals as well as some of the more interesting plant species we’ll be planting \nMeet at the Lewis Drive carpark\, Castlemaine for a 10:00 a.m. start.  This is just past the entrance to the Salvage Yard and Good Op Shop businesses. If you arrive late\, we’ll be working from there downstream. \nWear: gloves\, sturdy footwear (gumboots advisable) and clothing suitable for the weather.  It will be really useful if you can bring waders or a wetsuit\, and even more so if you are prepared to get in the creek: it’s much easier planting without bending over! \nBring your own drinking water if you need it. \nWe’ll provide everything else\, including light refreshments afterwards. \nHope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:Activity:  2024’s creekside planting at Lewis Swamp south. \nDescription: Please come along today to help us restore this creekside and wetland area adjacent to the trail. \nWith our help\, this area is recovering as a “Creekline Grassy Woodland” type of vegetation\, listed as an endangered community in Victoria (on page 5 in that URL’s document).  Because Campbells Creek has permanent flows from this site and downstream\, the environment here can also support vegetation typical of larger waterways. \nToday we’ll be planting river bottlebrush\, river tea-tree and eight other species\, all characteristic of creekbanks.  Supported by funding from the North Central CMA\, this should be our last major planting in this part of our creekside environment. \n  \n Meet at the Lewis Drive carpark\, Castlemaine for a 10:00 a.m.
