April 2025 Working bee for Eltham Copper Butterfly

April 27 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Activity:  improving potential habitat for Eltham Copper Butterfly.

Description:  Connecting Country has funded us to improve the suitability of some of ‘our territory’ for the nationally endangered Eltham Copper Butterfly (ECB).  You can read more about it on the Connecting Country web page.  You’ll see that one of the butterfly’s essential requirements is the Sweet Bursaria plant (usually a shrub in our district).  Although Sweet Bursaria is relatively common around Castlemaine, we don’t yet have many plants on this project site.

Today we’ll be sowing Bursaria seed collected from plants known to support ECB around Castlemaine, one of its few remaining habitat ‘hot spots’.  We’ll also be sowing seed of other plant species associated with nearby ECB populations and species that flower in summer, which is when the adult butterflies need nectar.

Meet: here on the trail from Honeycomb Road for a 10:00 a.m. start.  There’s plenty of parking space here at the north end of Honeycomb Road.  It’s a 200 m walk from there to the meeting point.  If you arrive late, we’ll be working somewhere near here.

When:  10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m Sunday the 27th of April

Please bring:  Your own drinking water.  We’ll supply the tools.

Wear: gardening/leather gloves, hat, and wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.

We’ll finish up with light refreshments.

Hope to see you there!
