Working bee

April 21, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Activity:  reviving Lewis Swamp south with direct seeding.

Description:  Within our ‘territory, ‘Lewis Swamp’ south had one of our worst infestation of crack willows, a weed of national significance and a food source for European wasps.  After three years of volunteer work and help from the North Central CMA, this area is finally free of this major threat!

Today we’ll be topping up our revegetation that survived both burial under flood debris in September 2022 and, the October 2023 cleanup with heavy machinery.  We’ll be sowing seed of Poa tussock grass, wattles and a few other species.  Direct sowing is easy work and is the most inexpensive way to re-establish these plants.  Autumn is the best time to sow the Poa labillardierei seed.

Meet at the Lewis Drive carpark, Castlemaine for a 10:00 a.m. start.   If you arrive late, we’ll be working from there downstream.

Wear: leather gloves (seeds will get stuck in fabric gloves), sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.

Bring your own drinking water if you need it.

We’ll supply everything else, including light refreshments afterwards.

Hope to see you there!
